“Getting In”
This award winning interactive was extremely well received, for over 10 years it remained one of the most popular exhibits at the Immigration Museum Melbourne.
It explores the interview process for refugees and others wishing to migrate to Australia. These dramatised interviews are based on historical and contemporary research and reflect the immigration policies and procedures of the day.
A small interview room puts visitors face to face with the applicants across a desk. By selecting from a touch screen, visitors can choose to interview applicants from various time periods and of different nationalities.
The American Association of Museums awarded a Silver plaque to the “Getting In” interactive as an outstanding project in the Education/Interpretive (History & Culture) section of the 2003 MUSE awards.
The exhibit also received the MIRA award for “Most Outstanding Project” from the Victorian chapter of Museums Australia. The judges singled out the interactive theatre as a highlight of the gallery and commended its design as a response to visitor requests, the degree of interactivity and ease of use of the exhibit.
